Prepare for an extraordinary birth!

This 12.5 hour course will teach you how to have a calm, comfortable and more relaxing birth. Over 5 workshops, you will learn the 6 components of HypnoBirthing: Education, Relaxation, Visualisation, Self-Hypnosis, Affirmations and Breathing.

What is HypnoBirthing™?

HypnoBirthing™ – The Mongan Method is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing™ is not new, but rather a “rebirth” of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who, in the 1920s, was one of the first to forward the concept of natural birthing. The method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.

You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony–as they were designed to–when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.

When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing™, you will not be in a trance or asleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.

You will be conversant and in good spirits–totally relaxed, but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain. HypnoBirthing is all about having an empowering and gentle birth! There is no right or wrong way to HypnoBirth. The ideal outcome is that the mother/couple are happy with their birth, whatever way that looks to them

Trained HypnoBirthing™ educators are successfully teaching women and their birthing companions to trust birth and release all fear and limiting thoughts. HypnoBirthing™ practitioners can be found in 46 countries throughout the world. The Mongan Method remains the original and longest-running community dedicated to using hypnosis during childbirth.

HypnoBirthing Techniques & Benefits

The overall effect of practicing HypnoBirthing® techniques is that birthing parents are better able to appreciate the benefits of calm, gentle birthing, making the experience a joyful one for mother, baby, and birth companion—benefits that can last a life time.

Contemporary women in our culture hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth, too often associating it with excruciating pain, thereby causing their bodies to become unable to perform what should be a normal physiological function. HypnoBirthing® is a unique method of relaxed, natural childbirth education enhanced by self‑hypnosis and guided imagery techniques that allow women to use their natural abilities to bring about safer, easier, and more comfortable birthing.

HypnoBirthing® techniques teach woman how to release all prior programming about birth to free herself of limiting thoughts and emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and resistant muscles. When giving birth with HypnoBirthing®, a mother is not in a trance or asleep but instead in a state of deep relaxation—awake, aware, and fully in control.

In a series of five confidence-building classes, they learn what makes labor hurt; but more importantly, they learn the logic behind why labor doesn’t have to hurt and what they can do about it. Moms and their birth companions study the physical and chemical changes that occur over a period of time when fear and anxiety are allowed to accumulate. This awareness of the fight, flight, or freeze response helps them to choose calm. They practice HypnoBirthing® techniques in class, designed to help them see the relationship between fear and the possibility of pain. These exercises become life skills that also shore up their parenting skills. Armed with this knowledge, the pattern of calming techniques and steps that they learn helps them to create endorphins and avoid the effect of the negative hormones that cause their bodies to constrict, rather than open.

The five-week series includes a HypnoBirthing® techniques textbook, relaxation CD, and everything you need to know to reconnect with your birthing instincts and create an amazing birthing experience.

Frequently asked questions

You can begin HypnoBirthing at any time, but we recommend the best time to start is between 18 – 30 weeks. Commencing the classes earlier in your pregnancy will give you time to practice the relaxation and to enjoy a more relaxed pregnancy.

However, it is never too late to start – you will still find the classes beneficial and valuable as long as you complete them prior to going into labour. Many couples have started the course late in their pregnancy (some as late as 37 weeks) and have still found it beneficial – all agree it is better to do it later than never.

Please book early to avoid disappointment, many classes do fill up fast.

If you do start the HypnoBirthing course prior to 25 weeks into your pregnancy you will be offered a free refresher session near to the end of your pregnacy.

*This free refresher can be in a class of your choice based on the availability in the class.

Yes – hypnobirthing dates back to the early 1900s, when British Doctor Grantly Dick-Read observed that in the absence of fear, women often had much more straightforward, more comfortable and quicker births. He set out to spread the word and de-mystify the birth process, and introduced families to the simple tools of self-hypnosis, relaxation and effective breathing. The benefits are now widely accepted by midwives and doctors. The Royal College of Midwives suggest hypnobirthing as a coping strategy in their ‘Ten top tips for birth’. For a research overview click here

The reason we ask couples to attend together is so the birth companion can understand the tools and techniques you are learning. Your birth companion will play a vital role in your labour and birth and we also teach them techniques and how assist you during this time.

It is not compulsory for the birth companion to participate in all of the relaxation exercises if they do not desire. However, it is recommend, as the skills you will learn can be applied to many different areas of your life!

Yourself, your birthing companion(s), your HypnoBirthing book and paper to take notes on. To maximise your comfort and ability to relax, please dress comfortably. You may bring along beanbags, your birthing ball extra cushions, pillows or a blanket if you desire.

During sessions we will take a short break and tea/coffee, light snacks will be provided. Please feel free to bring along any other snacks, or drinks (ie water bottle) if you would like to.

Please do NOT bring any horror birth stories or experiences. We will only be discussing positive birth stories in this course.

It’s up to you. The HypnoBirthing course will provide you information about natural birth and give you tools and techniques to use in a natural drug-free birth. Other ante-natal courses will cover different information such as interventions, complications and how to care for your baby. The knowledge gained through the HypnoBirthing course along with other ante-natal courses will help you to make informed decisions. Many couples also attend other ante-natal courses to develop a network of other parents due at the same time.
A lot of women feel extra confident by attending ante-classes offered by their hospitals. Again, it’s entirely up to you.

Most definitely. The tools and techniques you will learn in your HypnoBirthing course will be of use to you and your baby regardless of your birth experience. If medical intervention is required you will find yourself better able to remain calm and in control. Mums who have needed caesareans for medical reasons report that they were totally relaxed before, during and after the procedure and feel their recovery was very quick.

Self-hypnosis is useful for all sorts of medical procedures. Families can create their special calming ‘birth bubble’ and utilise the benefits of hypnobirthing, even if anaesthetised or in theatre (relaxing music, essential oils etc). It’s so much better to meet your baby whilst feeling as happy, relaxed and positive as possible. The reason behind HypnoBirthing being so successful during C-Sections to is that your birth breathing will negate the impact of cortisol and adrenaline produced when you are in the fear mode, allowing your body to relax and let go of any fear or stress. With your muscles relaxing, you will find it easier to accept a potentially uncomfortable medical treatment such as a spinal block / IV line.

Absolutely. Many women who’ve had a previous caesarean and are desiring a vaginal birth find the HypnoBirthing course very empowering and helpful in increasing their confidence levels. It’s also pleasing to hear that most of them do succeed in a natural delivery.

HypnoBirthing does not promise painless birthing, although many mums do report having a relatively pain-free birth, or one they were able to manage easily. When fear and tension constrict the birthing muscles higher pain levels are felt. Therefore, mothers who are calm, relaxed and free of fear usually accomplish their birthing in a shorter period of time and much more comfortably. A relaxed mother will produce more endorphins, nature’s own relaxants. HypnoBirthing mums may still experience sensations of tightening or pressure, but most describe their birth experience as working with their body through the sensations, therefore avoiding the excruciating pain that is frequently spoken of by other women.

Who likes pain? Most women profess to having a low pain tolerance. It’s no matter. Normal birth doesn’t have to be painful. Here’s how it works- HypnoBirthing trains your mind to be calm, confident, and positive, and trains your body to be relaxed and tension-free. You also adopt special breathing which makes birthing more comfortable and helps your body to labor more effectively. Mums practice these and other positive responses from day one of the course and they continue to build these skills throughout their pregnancy so that when labor begins these positive responses kick in automatically. So long as a mum maintains a calm mind and body, and breathes effectively, it is possible for her to experience only pressure or tightening and crampiness throughout labor and birth, (and not severe pain).

Many women who enroll in HypnoBirthing fully intend to take an epidural for birth. The program still offers significant benefits. The course builds your confidence and develops deep relaxation and focus skills so that labour can be more comfortable. The result is that many moms surprise themselves and discover that they don’t feel the need for pain medication. It’s also good to know, that  in reality, it takes time to receive the epidural. Care providers and hospital staff prefer to delay giving the epidural until the labour is well established. Sometimes the anesthesiologist is not available. Furthermore, the process of administering it requires patience and calm. For mums who do have an epidural, HypnoBirthing helps her to stay calm until she gets the epidural, as well as during the procedure of administering it. HypnoBirthing mums are better able to delay taking the epidural until later in labour. This makes it less likely to slow labor down which can necessitate further medical interventions.

Husbands and partners are ENCOURAGED to participate. The course fee covers husbands’/partner’s attendance or anyone who will be supporting you at your birth. Partners are an important part of HypnoBirthing. It is common for partners to be skeptical at first, but by the end they are just as enthusiastic and excited as the moms. Committing to the course means that you get a dedicated 12.5 hours of partner engagement, and once they are hooked on HypnoBirthing they are much more likely to commit to practicing the techniques with you. This is something that generally doesn’t happen when they don’t attend the course. The other good thing about bringing your partner to the course is that the skills you learn are extremely helpful in everyday life, particularly as a new parent. If your partner tends towards anxiety, stress or negativity, they have even more to gain from taking the course.
What’s more, you don’t have to choose your husband/partner to be your birth companion. You might choose to have a family member or friend alongside you. It’s entirely up to you!

Class sizes are small. Between 2 and 5 couples.

If you have a friend that is also pregnant, you can choose to have a group class with just the two of you.

Toggle ContSelf-hypnosis and deep relaxation are very effective tools. For you to be able to use them when you are in labour is an acquired skill that needs to be learned gradually in stages and practiced in between sessions. Look at it like most things you do in life, there needs to be continuous practice. It doesn’t happen all at once. And self-hypnosis and relaxation are things that require practice. Not only the practice element but think about doing a course all in one day or over a weekend, how much will you retain? Attending the class is of the utmost importance because a lot of people will be working through fears and stresses and the support will be there for you in these classes and be encouraging you in the best direction for you.  Classes are taken over a 5 week period to ensure that you have the time to develop the conditioned responses that make HypnoBirthing™ The Mongan Method so successful. There is no shortcut, and this is why we teach our course over 5 sessions. However, some classes that teach over a full weekend while still will be beneficial, the true HypnoBirthing™ way (the original way) is based on these 5 sessions.

Most of the class topics are covered in the book, so if this is the only option available to you, it is definitely a good thing to do. However, reading the book is not a substitute for attending a step-by-step training under the guidance of an qualified HypnoBirthing Educator.
I like to use the this analogy: Think of your favourite musician or band. If you listened to their album vs going to a live convert, how would it compare?

Pre/ Post Natal Coaching is coaching prior to the birth of your
baby which can focus on numerous areas such as:

  • Setting and Achieving Goals
  • Putting a plan in place for yourself to prepare for the birth of your baby
  • Gaining clarity in your life and planning your priorities before baby arrives
  • Talking through fears, anxieties about how your life will adapt with your new arrival.
After baby has arrived Post natal coaching
  • Can aid in achieving balance in your life.
  • It can support you making decisions about plans after baby. This can be returning to work, with childcare, around supports etc.

Additional Benefits of taking the course

Hypnosis Sessions– Much like guided meditations, the hypnosis scripts we do in class serve two main purposes. The first is to work to release fears and create positive beliefs about birthing through the power of positive suggestions. The second is to teach your body how to access the deep state of relaxation that you will enter during the birth. As with anything, practice makes perfect. The more often you experience this deeply relaxed state, the more familiar it becomes, and the easier it is to enter it on your birthing day.

Anchoring – This is a term we use to describe linking a specific physical or verbal cue, with a specific state. We have several great ‘anchors’ that help the mother to quickly reach a state of deep relaxation at any time she desires. These anchors   are initially set up during a hypnosis session in class, and with repeated practice at home the anchor becomes a really powerful tool for reaching that necessary state of deep relaxation during the birth.

Partner engagement – Partners are an important part of HypnoBirthing*.

The other good thing about bringing your partner to the course is that the skills you learn are transferable to all areas of life, particularly as a new parent. If your partner tends towards anxiety, stress or negativity, they have even more to gain from taking the course.

Relaxation – At first it may seem like a five-week course is just another thing to add to a busy schedule but once couples start the course this view quickly changes. Spending 2.5 hours a week focusing on relaxation and immersed in positive messages about the birth of your child soon becomes a highlight of the week. Couples report having the best sleep after the class and find it’s a great way to connect as a couple.

Commitment – We value things that we give our time and money to. We have found that taking the course ensures that moms will practice more which influences her results.

Questions – Learning is so much more effective when you have a chance to ask questions. In class you will be able to contribute to group discussions, try out techniques, and ask questions so that you feel confident and have mastered each technique.

Extra support – When you succeed, I succeed. Classes are filled largely by word-of-mouth referrals. As your instructor, I want you to have the best birth possible so that you will spread the word. I go above-and-beyond, and am happy to help in any way I can if you need additional support whether it be a listening ear, referrals to birth professionals etc. I also offer extra private sessions for special circumstances like a breech baby or to naturally induce labor.

*It is not essential to have a partner to join you at the classes although it is encouraged and recommended that they come. Your birth partner can also be a friend or family member if you prefer.
