What is Reiki and how can it help me?

Some FAQs about Reiki

“The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually ‘spiritually guided life force energy.’”- Reiki.org

The International Centre for Reiki training defines Reiki as, “a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.”
More to the point is that it is a type of energy work. What does that mean? Our bodies are energetic in nature. Our bones resonate at lower frequencies while our blood, thoughts etc. Vibrate at higher frequencies. This magnetic pulse is known as a biomagnetic field. In Eastern traditions, this pulse is also known as Ki or Prana. It is interesting to note that scientists have found that measuring the magnetic fields of the body with magneto cardiograms and magnetoencephalograms often provide a more accurate indication of what is happening in the body than traditional electrical measurements. When a practitioner is performing a healing session, the energy that emanates from their hands produce a significantly larger biomagnetic
reading (7-10Hz – Theta and Alpha range) than a nonpractitioner. These frequencies are associated with physical healing.

  • Contentment,
  • Relaxation,
  • Decreased feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety
  • As well as a reduction and in some cases, elimination of physical illnesses and persistent conditions

….. are common observations from clients after a Reiki session. There are countless case studies and anecdotal research verifying the effects of Reiki sessions.

Reiki is performed by the practitioner placing their hands on specific points of the person’s body. These points are also referred to as chakras. The practitioner’s hands don’t necessarily have to touch the body.  A lot of the time they will hover a couple of inches above the chakras. The whole idea behind the Reiki session is that the practitioner is attempting to balance the energy within the body. When this balance is achieved, the client will experience these feelings of relaxation, relief from both physical and emotional pain, and the decreased feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety.

As every client is individual, every Reiki practitioner is individual also.  I have never had two Reiki sessions that have been the same. People often ask me what will the experience during a Reiki session.  And to be honest, I can never answer that. How people will respond to Reiki is very individual. Some people will feel nothing, but pure relaxation. Others might see, hear, smell and sense things during a session.  A lot of people will feel the heat that emanates from the practitioner’s hands, or even slight tingling sensations throughout their body. But again, this isn’t necessarily always the case. The benefits of Reiki will differ from person to person. The commonality between people is their enjoyment of the Reiki session and most people who have one session of Reiki will return for many more.  The only way to truly know the experience of Reiki and how it will feel for you personally is to have a Reiki session.
