What is HypnoBirthing?

What is HypnoBirthing you ask? HypnoBirthing is a tried and proven method that guides and prepares a woman in giving birth in a peaceful and extraordinarily beautiful manner. It is a program a that considers the psychological, as well as the physical, well-being of the mother, her birth partner, and the newborn, independent of context, whether that be in the quiet of a home, a hospital, or a birth center.
The HypnoBirthing program is built around an educational process that includes special breathing, relaxation, visualization, meditative practice, attention to nutrition and positive body toning. Most importantly it fosters an air of mutual respect for the birthing family, as well as the health-care provider in a traditional health-care system or an alternative setting.
We know you have many choices and many decisions to make for your birthing experience. You have choices in selecting your care provider; you have choices in selecting the environment in which you will bring your baby into the world. Another important choice is that of the childbirth education classes you will choose to prepare for the birth of your baby. We know you will be happy with your choice of HypnoBirthing.

The HypnoBirthing Premise

For most of their lives, women have been inundated with the negative stories of other women’s birth experiences. Everyone, from their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends, and even strangers, wants to tell them the horrors of giving birth. They have been conditioned to believe that excruciating pain is associated with labor; and because of this, women today hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth. This extreme fear causes their bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits their bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function. The result is exactly what they feared most–long, painful birthing or unnecessary intervention.
People who are drawn to HypnoBirthing® have long been searching for a way to give birth confidently and as calmly, safely, and gently as possible, whether they have chosen to birth in a hospital, a birthing center, or at home. Until HypnoBirthing®, this kind of birthing almost seemed unattainable for the general population.
Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, healthy, low-risk women, as well as women who need medical assistance because of special circumstances, learn to dismiss fear-based stories, misinformation, and birthing myths; and they are helped to see birth as normal. They learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in the calm and gentle way that Nature intended.
HypnoBirthing® Classes are taught in a format of five, 2 1/2-hour classes. If you are very near to your birthing time, occasionally your Practitioner can make special arrangements for individual classes with you

While we haven't had our baby just yet; the training, information and insight we've received from this course has been amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to approach childbirth with a positive mindset, hoping for the most natural birth possible. We're looking forward to how this all turns out and now feel extra prepared and calm about the whole thing

The Hypnobirthing course was informative, empowering and enjoyable. It enabled us to have the confidence to seek out the birthing plan that was right for us. It brought us closer together as a couple as we prepared for the arrival of our little bundle. Hypnobirthing provided us with the information and tools to remain calm and focused during the birth of our beautiful daughter. The course was such a wonderful experience and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a holistic approach to birth.

Everything you need to know for a positive birth...

There is no firm time however from 20 weeks on is recommended. We find most parents like to start their HypnoBirthing preparations between 20 – 35 weeks.

We recommend that partner’s attend all HypnoBirthing classes wherever possible, along with an additional support  person. The support person can be a doula or family member who will attend classes with you and assist with your practice.

With fly-ins/fly-outs, the recommendation is to start HypnoBirthing classes as early as possible, around the 20 weeks so that there is plenty of opportunity to attend the classes together, or arrange for some private in-home sessions with Sarah.

Talk to Sarah about how they can best work with you in your circumstances. There is flexibility for special circumstances.

It is not recommended as part of the HypnoBirthing programme in order to achieve optimal benefits.

The exception is when you are very late in your pregnancy where only part of the programme can be covered to help you in the best way we can to achieve the best outcome for your birth.

The five week HypnoBirthing course gives adequate time for practice, reflection, time to get to know your baby and to know what and how you wish to birth. Sarah will help you over this time to become confident, familiar and relaxed.

A weekend course can create information overload, and we are learning from the hospitals that mothers that have taken weekend courses with other programs are not doing as well. We know that this program has been cleverly designed over the 5 sessions to release fears and have positive preparation. We want you to have the best birth you can, so we would be shortchanging you by working with you over a weekend. The 5 session format is definitely best for learning, results and preparing for a happy, calm birth.

Private sessions are €375 for 5 x 2.5 hour classes. (plus mileague depending on location)

Group sessions are €325 for 5 x 2.5 hour classes.

Payment plans are available.

No, absolutely not. With HypnoBirthing (in fact, virtually all hypnosis), you are aware of what is going on around you but you can just ‘tune out’ the distractions.  Your focus shifts from distractions to your amazing birthing body!

Hypnosis is absolutely safe and there is nothing to be scared of.

Unfortunately, TV, film and stage portrayal of hypnosis has left a lot of people with a mistaken view of what hypnosis is, and what it can (and can’t) do.

The misconception and impression that many people hold is that hypnosis is something magical, mystical and often dangerous. Hypnosis has even been portrayed by some, as a scary form of mind control, where people are made to give up control of themselves. Hypnosis is in fact the complete opposite, as people visit hypnotherapists or utilize self-hypnosis because they want help to gain more control over their lives, not less.

The phenomenon of hypnosis is firstly, and most importantly, a natural state of mind, which means that virtually every person has the natural capacity for response to hypnosis. There is nothing unnatural or supernatural about it. Hypnosis is simply a natural state of physical, mental and emotional relaxation, along with a heightened state of awareness.

This change of consciousness is extremely comfortable and relaxing, just like those moments before you fall asleep and as you start wake up in the morning. You’ll feel very relaxed, yet your mind will still be highly focused and aware. This in itself is very beneficial, particularly for those suffering with stress and anxiety issues, as it relaxes, refreshes and invigorates the mind and body.

Hypnosis is a means of moving into a perfectly natural state of mind, that people actually move in and out of several times a day. Everyone has experienced this trance like state, although they may not have called it hypnosis.

We all go in and out of different levels of consciousness all day. Daydreaming, reading, driving are all examples of every day tasks when we may enter an altered state of awareness.

Maybe, but this can’t be guaranteed.  There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control.

Also, like any childbirth preparation class, the success of the techniques is related to the amount of practice you put in.

However, as a guide, we find that around 65-70% of HypnoBirthing mums don’t need any form of pain relief. Nearly all the mums in this category simply don’t experience any pain – just pressure.

Around a further 20-25% only require something mild, like gas and air.

The remaining 5-10% usually fall into what we call ‘special circumstances’, where medical intervention is required. However, the HypnoBirthing mums still tell us that HypnoBirthing really helped – even if they were induced, or had a caesarean birth.

Remember – the aim of HypnoBirthing is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect ‘natural’ birth (although that is possible).

It is to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable birth- where you are in control – and in a way that most mirrors Nature.
